It takes courage and selfless humility to walk away from receiving an honor, and choose instead to honor your commitment as a Catholic in supporting life.

Former U.S. ambassador to the Vatican Mary Ann Glendon has refused to accept the Notre Dame’s Laetare Medal at commencement on May 17th. The Laetare Medal is considered the most prestigious honor for American Catholics.  Yet, she has declined the honor choosing instead to publically uphold her convictions as a Catholic and remove herself from a platform where President Obama, the guest speaker, is expected to receive an honorary law degree.

She joins others, such as Fort Wayne-South Bend Bishop John M. D’Arcy, who for the first time in his 25-year tenure as bishop of the region that encompasses the famous Catholic university, will not be on the main stage during the university’s commencement ceremonies.  Bishop cites President Obama’s “long-stated unwillingness to hold human life as sacred.”

“I wish no disrespect to our president, I pray for him and wish him well,” the bishop said in a statement. “I have always revered the office of the presidency. But a bishop must teach the Catholic faith “in season and out of season,” and he teaches not only by his words – but by his actions. My decision is not an attack on anyone, but is in defense of the truth about human life.”

At this time, over 350,000 signatures of protest have been secured by the Cardinal Newman Society and presented to Notre Dame’s President, Father John Jenkins, requesting that he withdraw his invitation.

Now the moment as come to see how the USCCB will respond publically to this matter.  In 2004, the United States of Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) approved a policy statement called “Catholics in Political Life,” which says, with reference to pro-abortion politicians, “They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.”

We can only hope that the USCCB stands as firmly as Glendon and Bishop D’Arcy in upholding Scriptural and Church teaching on the sanctity of life while enforcing the policy statement they generated.

STOPPED PLANNED PARENTHOOD

Should YOU be forced to underwrite Planned Parenthood with your tax dollars?

  • Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion chain in America and has killed more than 3 million innocent children at its facilities.

  • Planned Parenthood’s top goal for the next 25 years is to push its agenda of promiscuous sex everywhere in our society.

  • Planned Parenthood puts minors on birth control without parents’ knowledge or involvement.

  • Planned Parenthood has demonstrated a willingness to cover up for rapists and child predators.

  • Planned Parenthood pushes pornography onto children with shocking and offensive websites, books, and literature.

  • Planned Parenthood is openly hostile to Christianity, and regularly mocks people of faith.

  • Planned Parenthood hurts women with misleading and dishonest medical information.

  • And Planned Parenthood does all of this with over $336.7 million dollars a year of your tax money.

raisehandIt is easy to dismiss what you can not see.  The world could not conceive of the holocaust of WWII until the camps were liberated.  People around the world couldn’t believe that such inhumanity against their fellow man could be possible.  It was only when the allies opened the “gates of hell” that the world saw the horrors of what had truly occurred.  The unthinkable was their reality.

Likewise, the Pre-Born Holocaust that has been with us for far too long…continues.  It continues without outrage and disgust, because it is keep hidden from the masses. Many people refuse to view an abortion video, because they don’t wish to accept what it truly is.  It’s legalized murder.

Recently, Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priest for Life, has produced a video entitled “Everyone Against Abortion, Please Raise Your Hand.”

“Viewers are calling ‘Raise Your Hand’ the most powerful, memorable, and touching pro-life video they’ve ever seen, yet there are no bloody images or controversial statements in it,” said Fr. Pavone. “The outstretched hand of this child is reaching a lot of people.”

The video, which was launched on March 6 through an advertisement at the Drudge Report, is now available on YouTube.com and the Priests for Life website. Comments on the production have been pouring in to the Priests for Life office all weekend.

“The responses are overwhelming,” added Fr. Pavone. “People who have been in the pro-life movement for 35 years, people who have always been against the use of graphic images are saying this video leaves an indelible mark in a moving, loving way. This picture speaks more than a thousand words; it gives voice to 50 million lives.”

View the video here and share with others.  Only through education can we succeed at stopping abortion.  Remember, it is easy to dismiss what you do not see.  However, as Christians be understand what Scripture tells us.

“Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”  [Hebrews 11:1]

As Respect Life Ministers, we continue to pray for the defeat of the Freedom of Choice Act in the country and for the change of heart by those who support abortion.

A Big Step Toward Widespread Euthanasia

Beginning on Thursday, March 5 in Washington state, doctors may prescribe lethal drugs to patients they determine have less than six months to live.  This marks the implementation stage of a law passed last November by voters in the state.

Assisted suicide laws like those passed in Oregon and Washington don’t happen by chance.

In many ways, Washington’s new law mirrors a measure passed in 1997 in Oregon. But there are two reasons why I believe the Washington case, in particular, will move the country much closer to the widespread euthanasia of the most vulnerable members of our society – something its supporters promise will never happen.

At first glance the Washington law appears to be relatively moderate, with clear and restrictive parameters:

-  Patients must be at least 18 years old

-  Declared competent

-  Be a resident of the state.

-  Patients must make two oral requests of the lethal drug, 15 days apart, and submit a written request witnessed by two people, one of which must not be a relative, heir, attending doctor, or connected with a health facility where the requester lives.

-  No doctor is obliged to prescribe the drugs.

But if we scratch the surface, the whole scenario starts to get very messy.

elderlyFirst, the new Washington law prohibits doctors from documenting their patient’s real cause of death if it is from doctor-prescribed drugs – even when they are certain the patient has taken them.  Instead, doctors must certify the cause of death as the patient’s original illness.  Yes, in Washington, what rational people would consider malpractice-lying about the cause of death-is now required by law.

This is a perfect example of the Machiavellian politics surrounding state laws that oblige citizens to subject truth (in this case medical science) to convenience, for whatever sordid reason.   According to the law’s supporters, the reason for this measure is to protect a patient’s right to privacy (apparently, an absolute right that in this case trumps even transparency).  As it turns out, this stipulation in the law makes things very convenient for the of the euthanasia movement.  Without this end-of-life documentation, it is impossible to produce definitive data about how many people will have used doctor-prescribed drugs to end their lives in the Evergreen State.

The second great reason for concern is the increasing financial benefits assisted suicide laws provide to strapped state budgets and to HMOs.  Even before our current financial crisis, there was already evidence that patients in Oregon had been offered free suicide drugs as a less costly alternative to expensive healing or palliative medicines.  A case in point was Barbara Wagner, a 64-year-old Oregon resident, who was informed last May that her cancer had returned.  Her doctor prescribed a new drug that could extend her life, but Oregon’s Medicaid program sent her a form letter saying it would not cover the cost of the drugs.   In the same unsigned letter she was also offered information about an affordable alternative: Medicaid would cover “comfort care”, including “physician aid in dying” (the lethal drugs would have cost the state less than $100).  Barbara died in October, but first left this moving video, pleading with the voters of Washington state not to let the same thing happen to them. Eventually, the director of Oregon’s Medicaid program admitted the organization sends such letters to patients whom they think have little chance of surviving.

Assisted suicide laws like those passed in Oregon and Washington don’t happen by chance.  The activist group, “Death with Dignity,” has mapped out a national strategy designed to pass similar laws across the country.  In the organization’s 2007 annual report, for example, it made its case for going after Washington as the next stop on its campaign:

“This next year, we will be directing our legal and political efforts, along with financial resources, to a coalition of groups working to expand end-of-life options for the terminally ill in the state of Washington. … [W]e have never had such great odds of success as we have in Washington in 2008. That is why we will be directing $1.5 million over the next year and a half to the efforts in Washington.”

“Death with Dignity” has recruited benefactors with high hopes for relaxing restrictions on euthanasia.  If former Washington governor, Booth Gardner, has any say (and he has already made his voice heard by donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to the assisted suicide campaign in his state), the laws will become increasingly less restrictive as we get more accustomed to the practice.  As a Parkinson’s patient, Governor Gardner has lamented that current laws still only cover terminally ill patients with less than six months to live.  While it is understandable the governor is concerned about his own future, I wonder if he has given any thought to the consequences for people of lesser means whose choice between life and death will be made for them by the state and HMOs, if he gets his way.  For the most vulnerable in our society, the buzz words of “privacy” and “choice” are never as nice as they seem to the rest of us.

Beginning this week, let’s keep our eye on Washington state.  Economics have a way of speeding things along…

God bless,

Father Jonathan

“Then children were brought to Him that He might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked them, but Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”   ~ Mathew 19: 13, 14

In our present culture, we can often feel hopeless toward much that we see.  The culture of death and permissiveness seems to be growing with each generation.

They by the grace of God, a child steps forth to proclaim the Gospel of Life with such conviction and confidence, it is hard to believe that she is only 12 years old.

Her name is Lia.  She lives in Canada where her school offered a speech contest to students.  Without any prompting from her family, Lia chose her topic; abortion.  Lia stood firm and would not waver on your topic of choice, despite being discouraged by her teacher and school officials.

Lia’s mother, Kimberly says, “Her teacher was really impressed by this speech and perhaps moved by it, and therefore her teacher kind of was a real supporter of [Lia] winning for the class,” Kimberly notes. “And she had to go through a couple of hoops and get clearance from a couple of other teachers before she could be declared winner of the class.”

Because of a disagreement between the judges on the panel, prompting one to step down from participating,  Lia was initially disqualified.  She was asked to take out this portion of her speech: “[F]etuses are definitely humans knit together in their mother’s womb by their wonderful Creator who knows them all by name.”

Lia gave a great deal of thought about removing that portion of her speech, and ultimately decided that it must remain.  Despite Lia’s firm stand, contrary to the judges’ request, the panel declared Lia the winner.

Now everyone can see Lia’s speech on YouTube, which has been viewed by over 200,000 people.

Notes Jan. 22 Abortion Anniversary and New Administration

DENVER, Colorado, JAN. 22, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Archbishop Charles Chaput exhorted Catholics across the United States to “let your voice supporting life be heard,” in the ear of the new political administration.

chooselife1The archbishop of Denver asserted this in an article published Wednesday in the Denver Catholic Register.

He began by affirming the obligation of Christians to “love their country, build on its greatest qualities and serve its best ideals.”

The prelate spoke about the duty to pray for our leaders and obey the law, “insofar as the law does not violate human dignity in some systematic, gravely evil way.”

He added, “When bad laws and court decisions cripple the soul of a society, Christians must work to change them as a matter both of justice and charity. Otherwise we risk colluding in the evil of their outcome.

“Obviously with families to raise, jobs to pursue and lives to live, not all Christians can be engaged in the many important issues facing our country. But we can always at least serve the truth by not lying to ourselves and to each other.”

Obama

Archbishop Chaput referred to the inauguration of U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday, noting that “he was elected on a message of national renewal, unity and hope.”

He continued: “These are worthy goals, and we should wholeheartedly support his administration in all these things. His inauguration marks a tremendous victory for racial justice in our country [...].

“Barack Obama’s rise to the presidency reminds us that among the family of nations, the United States remains very unusual: It is still a place where people can succeed on their ability; where politics can actually matter; and where evil structures and laws can be changed by sustained, peaceful witness.”

The archbishop turned his focus to today’s anniversary of “one of the most destructive Supreme Court decisions in American history, Roe vs. Wade.”

“By legalizing permissive abortion and drastically limiting voters’ ability to restrict it in any way,” he explained, “Roe set the foundations for an abortion industry that has wounded countless women and resulted in the killing of more than 40 million unborn children.”

The prelate pointed out that “President Obama’s past record of support for abortion ‘rights,’ embryonic stem cell research and other violations of human dignity is deeply troubling, and also deeply ironic, given his sensitivity to other human rights.”

btn-fightfoca-ad-01He underlined the fact that “before and during the recent election, then-Senator Obama pledged his support for a Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) that would strike down all state restrictions on abortion and sweep away the many modest but important gains made by the pro-life movement over the past three decades.”

The archbishop acknowledged that the president’s Catholic supporters “claim that a pro-FOCA effort is unlikely in the coming congressional session, and that the Obama administration may take a go-slow approach to the abortion issue.”

He asserted: “We can hope this is true. But of course, the form and timing of FOCA-like efforts are irrelevant.

“It’s the political intent behind them that matters. We have to work with what we know to be true by the president’s own words.

“The Obama administration was elected on the economy, but along with President Obama’s economic mandate comes his forcefully abortion ‘rights’ public record and party platform. Nothing in the president’s words or actions has suggested a change in his fundamental goals.”

Speaking up

Archbishop Chaput explained that Catholics in the United States, including those in the Archdiocese of Denver, will have the chance “to sign a petition to our elected officials opposing FOCA and asking them to respect the dignity of unborn human life.”

He underlined that: “Whether FOCA actually materializes in the coming session of Congress is not finally important; the message we send is.

“In fact, with the current Congress and administration, the abortion lobby could accomplish its destructive agenda quite easily by incremental legislative and executive steps that would have a much lower profile than a ‘Freedom of Choice Act,’ but the same bloody effect.”

“We’re in a new moment for our country,” said the prelate, “a moment that offers great promise, but also requires great vigilance and sustained action to defend the dignity of human life at its earliest and most vulnerable stage.”

He exhorted his readers: “When you’re asked to sign the U.S. bishops’ petition opposing FOCA in your parish, please sign it enthusiastically and encourage others to do the same.

“This is an issue — protecting unborn human life — that transcends party affiliation and needs all of us as believers to speak clearly with one voice.”

It’s difficult to image that our culture could dig any deeper in devaluing life, but Planned Parenthood has accomplished the once unthinkable.

pplogo_cropped2The Indiana offices of Planned Parenthood are offering women the “gift” of abortion.  This holiday season, Planned Parenthood is advertising gift certificates.  In their words; “Looking for an unusual, yet practical gift this holiday season? Planned Parenthood of Indiana (PPIN) is now offering gift certificates for services or the recipient’s choice of birth control method.”

The gift certificates can be purchased in increments of $25 online at the group’s web site or for any amount at some of PPIN’s 35 statewide facilities.  Betty Cockrum, the CEO of PPIN justifies this effort by confirming that recipients of this “gift” can redeem them for contraception, birth control and legitimate medical services like breast exams and Pap tests, and also to pay for abortions.

“Why not buy a loved one a gift this holiday season that they really need,” Cockrum says in a press release LifeNews.com obtained. “The gift certificates are also a wonderful idea for that person in your life who puts everyone else first.”

“Please join Planned Parenthood of Indiana and give the gift of health this holiday season,” she adds.preborn2

Speaking to WISH-TV, Chrystal Struben-Hall, PPIN’s vice president, confirmed that these “gifts” can be used for abortions also.

“They really are intended for preventative healthcare. We decided not to put restrictions on the gift certificates so it’s for whatever people feel they need the services for most,” she said.

These “death certificates” are just another confirmation of Planned Parenthood’s agenda.
